School Bus Safety Guidelines and Rules
Students and families must follow these safety guidelines and rules to ensure a safe transportation experience:
- Arrive at your designated bus stop 5–10 minutes early.
- Wait in a safe location away from the road. Never stand in the danger zone (10 feet from all sides of the bus or three giant steps away).
- Enter or exit the bus only when it has completely stopped, and the doors are open.
- Vehicles in both directions must stop when the bus is stationary, its overhead red lights are flashing, or its stop arm is activated.
- Observe classroom behavior on the bus —horseplay, unruly behavior and abusive language are unacceptable.
- Tobacco, vapes, food, drinks, animals, glass containers and oversized items are not permitted on the bus.
- Keep aisles and stairwells always clear.
- Never extend any part of your body out of the bus windows.
- Remain seated while the bus is moving and use the handrails when boarding or exiting. Avoid pushing or shoving.
- Emergency exits must only be used in actual emergencies.
- Drivers will only unload passengers at their designated stops unless they have written authorization approved by the school administration.
- Follow the driver’s instructions promptly; they are responsible for maintaining safety.
Safety Measures and Pre-Trip Inspections
We take every precaution to ensure our buses are safe and road-ready. Before each trip, drivers conduct a pre-trip inspection, which includes:
- Checking oil levels and engine health
- Inspecting brake systems and tire conditions
- Ensuring emergency exits and handrails function properly
- Verifying that the lights, stop arms, and signals are operational
Watch the video School Bus Pre-Trip Inspection for a detailed look at our safety process. (need to put video on youtube?)
