Meals

At Kayenta Boarding School, we are committed to creating a school environment that supports children’s health, well-being and academic success by providing nutritious meals and promoting healthy eating habits. Our school meal programs align with federal, state and local nutrition standards.
Our Commitment to Healthy School Meals
Our school meals are thoughtfully designed to provide students with balanced, nutritious options every day. We ensure that meals:
- Feature plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk.
- Are moderate in sodium, low in saturated fat and free of trans fats (per nutrition label or manufacturer specifications).
- Meet the nutritional needs of students within their calorie requirements.
Our goals include improving students’ overall diet and health, supporting the fight against childhood obesity, and modeling healthy eating habits. We also aim to accommodate cultural food preferences and special dietary needs to ensure all students feel included and supported.
USDA Child Nutrition Programs
Kayenta Boarding School proudly participates in the following USDA child nutrition programs:
- National School Lunch Program (NSLP)
- School Breakfast Program (SBP)
- Summer Feeding Program
Additionally, we offer unique initiatives like school gardening, which engage students in learning about where food comes from and the importance of healthy eating.
Our meal programs adhere to USDA nutrition standards and are:
- Accessible to all students.
- Appealing and enjoyable for children.
- Served in clean and welcoming environments.
- Fully compliant with local, state and federal nutrition guidelines.
Universal Free Meals for All Students
Kayenta Boarding School offers all students access to free breakfast and lunch every school day — no applications required. This exciting initiative ensures every child receives the nutrition they need to learn, grow and thrive.
We encourage all families to participate in this program because universal meal participation offers many benefits to our school community, including:
- Strengthening School Culture
Sharing meals together helps create a sense of belonging and builds a positive school community. Students can explore new foods, make healthy choices, and prepare for learning and play. - Supporting the School and Community
Increased student participation in school meal programs brings additional federal funding to support the purchase of fresh and nutritious foods, contributing to the program's financial stability. - Helping Families
By participating in the program, families save time and money while ensuring their children have access to nutritious meals that fuel focus and learning.
